HI from ARNIE!

Arnie wanted to say Hi! to all his old girl friends.

Arnie joined our family a month ago when his original foster family moved away and didn't think Arnie could handle the cross-country trip. He has made great progress in the last year, but he still has not learned to walk on leash. The result is that he has grown obese from lack of exercise. Anybody else have this problem? How did you solve it?

GOOD TO SEE YOU ARNIE!

  1. I don't know if it's lack of exercise that causes the dogs to pack on the pounds. Most of the Gabbs dogs we have left have been getting tubby, even with regular exercise. I think their metabolism is geared to starvation rations. We still have three that are not leash trained. Two try to eat the leash, one just lays on the ground and plays dead. Most were captured by being lassoed, so their first experience with the leash was pretty bad.
Robin sent me some video clips of him working with Dinkie. I think he used a slow process of putting things around her neck to desensitize her. Then a collar, then a drag lead and finally putting tension on the lead. But I'm just guessing. Now that the warm weather is here, we'll get back to serious work with Turtle, Winnie and Joe. If we have a breakthrough, I'll let you know.
And say "Hi" to Arnie for me. He was one of my favorites. What a personality. Email me at klbrown@tele-net.net and I'll send you some pictures of Arnie at Gabbs.

  2. Hey Jim,

Kris is right. Robin Wenham at Cirrus Ranch did wonders with Dinky on the leash. I love taking her for walks. BTW - even with the walks and exercise she put on about 8-10 pounds.
